Arte Sarda di Sollai R. & C.
Legend has it that whoever reaches Sardinia for the first time by sea becomes aware when still many miles from the coast of the pungent aroma of the island. This essence of Sardinia is a mixture of the maquis vegetation and the lordly mistral wind, which seems to pick up and sprinkle the island’s myriad colours along its path.

Sardinian handicrafts have a weighty inheritance - they incorporate and express a complex and multi-faceted history. Tracing this inheritance to its roots means taking a long and exciting journey back to pre-history, noting along the way the influence of the early and late stone age, Roman and Byzantine times. But over and above these influences and its cultural roots, Sardinian folk art has developed a strong regional character, differing quite clearly from any other folk art.

The particular characteristics are originality and simplicity expressed through essential forms. These are fruit of rich local traditions which embrace history, traditional costumes, art and lifestyle, and this is why Sardinian handicrafts can be classified as true folk art - they are the expression of an entire nation’s culture.
